AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Doctors Hospital will put on hold all inpatient elective surgeries starting Wednesday to manage the surge of COVID-19.

The Augusta-area hospital is making the decision as COVID-19 cases continue to reach record-breaking points for hospital systems across the area.

Outpatient elective surgeries are still continuing as scheduled.

Doctors Hospital says they now have 81 patients for COVID-19 as of Tuesday morning -- a new record for the hospital since the start of the pandemic.

Meanwhile, other hospitals in the CSRA are reporting a similar spike.

Statewide in Georgia, around 20 percent of people tested for COVID-19 are positive. In South Carolina, 1 in 3 tests is coming back positive.

Back during the previous peak in Georgia, that number hovered around 12 to 15 percent statewide.
