AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Aiken County Soil and Water Conservation District held a contest to transform storm drains into works of public art.

Monday, work began for the five new murals on Newberry Street.

“We’re hoping that people will see the beautiful art on the sidewalks in downtown Aiken and that it’ll start a conversation. You know, why is that there? And hopefully, adults will be able to tell their children that they’re drawing attention to the fact that you should not pollute the waterways,” said Sonta Terry, the district’s manager.

The conservation district says many assume the water from storm drains goes to sewer treatment facilities. Anything that goes into the storm drain goes to the nearest river, lake, or stream.

Professional and emerging artists and ninth- through 12th-graders living in Aiken County were invited to submit their designs.

The overall winner will get $250.
