(CNN) – Aldi customers will no longer be able to purchase plastic bags.

The discount grocery retailer has eliminated plastic shopping bags from all 2,300 U.S. stores.

The retailer aims to promote sustainability by reducing the use of plastic bags and encouraging customers to bring their own reusable bags.

Customers who forget to bring their reusable bags can buy cloth bags in the stores.

Aldi’s CEO said the company became the first major retailer in the U.S. to eliminate bags at all its stores.
