BAMBERG, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Cleanup from the Jan. 9 tornado continues in Bamberg, with many volunteers in the community coming together on Friday for a special effort.

Keep Bamberg County Beautiful and Bamberg County Public Information Officer Alisha Moore coordinated Friday’s cleanup in the wake of a tornado that left a swath of damage through the community.

Forty volunteers from various public sectors gathered on Calhoun Street to collect 60 bags of trash.

The group of volunteers included:

  • County Councilman Larry Haynes, District 3
  • The Denmark Technical College Basketball Team
  • One for All Motorcycle Group
  • Edisto Electric
  • Bamberg Health Coalition

The twister rated a 2 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale that measures tornadoes, and it caused the collapse of a historic downtown building – something that was captured in a dramatic video.

“Bamberg has always been a family and always will be,” Haynes said. “When one of us hurts, we all hurt. I was simply doing my part to help my family.”

EARLIER COVERAGE:

Bamberg County Public Information Officer Alisha Moore, who only recently moved to town, reflected on how despite the odds against them, no one should ever count Bamberg County out.

“It’s in the toughest times that a community can show not just the rest of the country but also themselves what they’re made of,” she said. “And in this moment following the devastation of an EF-2 tornado, Bamberg County has clearly demonstrated how a united community can persevere. That spirit makes me proud to call the ever-resilient Bamberg home.”
