Bond set for SC State student charged in campus shooting

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina State University said a student was arrested Tuesday after a gun was reportedly fired in an academic building.

Campus police said they responded and arrested sophomore Rolando J. Ifill, 19, in a foot chase.

Ifill, of Charleston, was charged with carrying a firearm on school property.

More charges are pending and no injuries were reported.

Ifill was granted a $50,000 surety bond on Wednesday with the condition he does not tres SC State’s campus unless accompanied by law enforcement.

The university was on lockdown from 11:30 a.m. to 12:26 p.m.

Claflin University’s campus also went on lockdown.

WIS News 10 obtained the incident report.

According to that report, officers spotted Ifill on Dutton Street in an attempt to stop him on foot.

Ifill eventually complied with officers and was detained. A 9mm handgun was found in his left jacket pocket along with a backpack with numerous items that ODPS later confiscated.

According to a letter sent by Claflin University’s president Dwaun Warmack, the campus went on lockdown after an S.C. State student ran to Claflin’s dining hall seeking safety. Officials said the student suffered minor injuries from broken glass but is now safe and receiving care.

Campus police continue to investigate the shooting with the assistance of the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.
