EVANS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A teacher at Evans Elementary School has ed away, school system officials announced on Tuesday.

Columbia County School System officials announced they were told that Kheri Cash ed away on Monday.

The school’s staff directory listed her as a kindergarten teacher.

Officials say, “Sadly, we were notified of her ing yesterday. We have alerted our parents and staff and will have additional counselors available at the school today to assist students as needed during this difficult time.”

We spoke with one parent who says Cash taught her daughter and son.

“She had my daughter for kindergarten as well. Um, which is the video you saw. She was always just, like, super sweet, very loving, very caring,” said Dottie Mellnick.

She says Cash was the kind of teacher who was willing to help.

It’s something she knows well as her son has special needs.

“She was an amazing teacher. She was an amazing person. I had to talk to her multiple times, you know, dealing with my son and his hearing aids and that kind of stuff,” she said.

Mellnick says she was a great person who was loving and caring to her students and their families.

One person on social media said: “This is so sad, she will be missed!”

It’s a loss that came as a shock for many.

“I was just shocked,” said Mellnick.

While it’s a tough thing for a child to understand, Mellnick says there’s one thing her kids will about their kindergarten teacher.

“They definitely her and her kindness,” she said.

The school district says they have counselors available for students and staff who need it during this difficult time.
