AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Don’t forget, there will be temporary lane closures for the construction project of widening Furrys Ferry Road starting Monday.

Mounds of dirt, construction equipment and orange barrels continue to grow here on the side of Furys Ferry Road.

But Kyle Titus with Columbia County Engineering said two new closures prove workers are doing more than moving dirt.

“There will be two temporary lane closures. One will be between Anderson Circle and Bridlewood Trail. The other temporary lane closure is going to be the right turn southbound lane onto Evans to Locks Road,” he said.

Titus said Furys Ferry Road is a two-lane highway with ditches that lack curbs and gutters.

The first closure will add curbs and fix stormwater issues.

“Whenever you have a curb, you concentrate stormwater, and you have to concentrate it somewhere and take it to a storm drainage system. The culverts are part of the storm draining system,” said Titus.

Part two of the closure is for more sidewalks.

“That will be so that we can start demolishing the existing sidewalk and start building the new 10-foot wide multi-use trail. It’s a pedestrian facility that we’re just going to run the length of that corridor,” said Titus.

He said it’s all part of a plan that will come together within the next five years.

“When we’re done with all of these projects, I would say in the next five years or so, you will be able to walk, ride your bike along a multi-use path or Greenway Trail from Grovetown all the way up William Few Parkway, all the way to Furys Ferry to Evans to Locks. Then up to the Savannah Rapids, which goes all the way to the Augusta along the river,” said Titus.

There will be a lane closure on Fury’s Ferry from Bridlewood Trail to Anderson Circle from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 11 through March 20.

There’s another one on March 12 through March 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the southbound right-turn lane of Furys Ferry to Evans to Locks Road.

Other closures

  • From Monday through March 15, R.A. Dent Boulevard will be closed between John Wesley Gilbert Drive and Druid Park Avenue for repair work. Detours will be in place, and heavy congestion and slow travel are expected in these busy areas.
  • From Monday through June 14, Miramar Drive will be closed at Braddock Street due to utility repair. The detour route will be Hinman Drive and Almon Drive.
