Clyburn files for reelection to Congress
WASHINGTON (WCSC) - U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn will run for reelection in South Carolina’s 6th Congressional district, the state’s largest.
The Democrat has served in the House of Representatives since 1993.
Clyburn spoke Monday about his continued efforts with the Biden-Harris istration and the work he’s done to help South Carolinians.
Clyburn announced in February that he would step down as assistant leader from the House Democratic Caucus, a position he held since January of 2023.
“I am deeply grateful for the confidence my colleagues have placed in me throughout my career, especially as co-president of my Freshman Class, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, vice chair and chair of the House Democratic Caucus, and twice as Majority Whip and assistant Democratic leader,” he said in a statement.
But he made it clear he has no intention of leaving Congress.
“Events of the last several years have made it clear that the greatness of America is at peril, and the threats to our continued pursuit of ‘a more perfect Union’ are real,” he said.
Clyburn was the House Majority Whip from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.
Republican Duke Buckner filed over the weekend to challenge the incumbent.
Buckner graduated from South Carolina State University and currently practices law in Walterboro. He says his top priorities include securing the southern border, reducing the national debt and improving education.
“Mr. Clyburn has been in office for over 30 years. He will be turning 84 in July, and it’s time for change,” Buckner said. “Despite having high rank in Congress, we still remain the poorest Congressional district in the state and the seventh poorest in the country.”
Buckner will face candidate Justin Scott in the June 11 Republican primary. Gregg Marcel Dixon is also running as United Citizens Party candidate.
The 6th District is the largest in South Carolina and covers all or part 14 of the state’s 46 counties, including portions of Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester and Orangeburg Counties.
