AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Computers have become an essential part of our lives. We use them for work, school, entertainment, and connecting with friends and family.

But how long do computers last? And what can we do to extend their lifespan?

Several factors can shorten a computer’s lifespan. Depending on what you use the computer for, it should last 8-10 years before needing to be replaced.

Factors that can shorten a computer’s lifespan

  • Accidents: Dropping a laptop or spilling liquid on it can damage the hardware and lead to premature failure.
  • Heat: Computers generate heat, and if they’re not properly ventilated, they can overheat and damage the components.
  • Viruses and malware: Viruses and malware can damage files, steal your personal information, and even take control of your computer.
  • Improper shutdown: Improperly shutting down your computer can damage the operating system and other files.

Tips for extending the life of your computer

  • Protect your computer from accidents: Be careful not to drop your laptop or spill liquids on it. Use a case or sleeve to protect your laptop when you’re carrying it around.
  • Keep your computer cool: Keep your computer in a well-ventilated area and avoid blocking the vents. Use a cooling pad if necessary.

  • Clean your computer regularly: Dust and dirt can build up inside your computer and cause it to overheat. Clean your computer regularly with a can of compressed air and dust off the filters.
