Tybee mayor says Orange Crush was better than past years
TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) - Orange Crush took place on Tybee Island over the weekend despite heavy controversy after last year’s event that saw around 50,000 people and gridlocked traffic.
But this year, the city took precautions to keep that from happening again.
One of the biggest concerns after last year’s event was traffic.

To help, this year the city blocked off any street parking on Butler Avenue, while also bringing it from a four-lane road down to a two-lane road.
The mayor says over the weekend, vehicles continued to move through the roadways, and although they were moving slowly, it was still a big improvement from last year when roads were gridlocked.
“It did work and we’re grateful for that. That was the goal for me, was to keep the traffic moving because whenever it stops that’s when people get out and then we have a mess,” said Mayor West.
Several law enforcement agencies were also out here this weekend, including GSP, the Chatham County Police Department and the Department of Natural Resources.
This was an unpermitted event, meaning the city of Tybee, after a recently approved bill, will be able to hold promoters financially able for any costs.
The mayor says they’ve already been able to serve one of the promoters.
