Wrens venue offers inclusive prom for young adults
WRENS, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A venue in Wrens is hosting an inclusive prom for those ages 15 and up.
It’s a one-of-a-kind experience being offered at no cost.
When Dianne Gove and her husband bought Brushy Creek Golf Course in Wrens, the goal was to transform the property.
So, they built a venue in the middle of the fairway. Now, they are ready to do something special with it for those with special abilities.
“I was just sitting in church, and they announced the Night to Shine, which is going to be on the Augusta campus at Warren,” said Dianne, owner of The Venue at Legare’s Landing.
That’s when she says she felt a tug from the Lord, to use her restored golf course venue as a way to give those outside of Augusta, a night they will never forget.
“It’s a little difficult, I believe, for a lot of the individuals, especially in this rural area, to be able to travel there. So, we were hoping that we could find some individuals in this county and surrounding counties, and it would just be easier for them to come and participate,” said Dianne.
Dianne says thanks to several sponsors, the ‘Illuminating Experience’ prom night is coming to life.
“We’ve got a dinner for them planned and just an evening of fun and music. In the end, we’ve got some crowns. We’ve got some tiaras, so we will crown each and every one of them,” she said.
They have everything from the red carpet to hair and nails to a dance floor and a sensory-aware DJ.
“We’ll help them create their own little water bottle, just personalize it, and they will build a bag. We’ve got sunglasses, we’ve got flashlights, we have different treats and things. So we’ll just keep them busy for a little bit until the music starts and until they’re able to come in,” said Dianne.
The only thing they are missing is a large group of special kings and queens to celebrate. So, she’s calling on the community to spread the word.
“We’ve got the volunteers, we’ve got the sponsors, we don’t have a lot of individuals that have signed up. This is a free event for them, so we hope that more will sign up. We also understand that it’s going to be slow for the first year and that’s fine. We’re going to hold this event no matter how many people are here and it’s going to be wonderful,” she said.
The prom is May 4 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Dianne says this will happen no matter how many show up.
