Golden Harvest offers summer program for kids at Urban Farm
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Golden Harvest Food Bank invites kids ages 6-14 and their families to the organization for the Sprout Scouts summer program at the Urban Farm next to the Master’s Table soup kitchen in downtown Augusta.
This program offers children the opportunity to become urban farmers for a day while helping grow food to be used in meals at the soup kitchen.
It is a great opportunity for both kids and their families to learn about nature, sustainability, and community service, the food bank said.
“A lot of people don’t know that a lot of people are struggling with buying groceries, getting groceries, but down at the Master’s Table Soup Kitchen through Golden Harvest we are changing lives every day and we are so grateful to have the community come in and help us,” said LaDonna Doleman, manager at Master’s Table Soup Kitchen.
14-year-old heads to nationals for Scottish Highland dancing
Brynn Brown is a Scottish Highland dancer and she’s traveling from North Augusta to Boston for nationals. It’s a tradition ed down through generations.

Sara Mitchell, Urban Farm program coordinator, said: “It’s a great way to get kids outside, get them digging in the dirt. Show them how carrots grow, show them what chickens do and it’s really teaching them how to be an urban farmer.”
All children must be accompanied by an adult during the duration of the program.
Valerie Easton brought her grandkids out last year and said they wanted to come back this summer.
“It’s very important that they get out and learn something different. Learn where your food comes from, learn how to grow it, learn to tell what is what because a lot of it does not have names on, so they can learn what the leaves are, and to be able to feed someone else is a good opportunity for them to volunteer also,” said Easton.
The kids learn greenhouse care, check on the chickens, help maintain the garden and learn what it’s like to grow something.
Mitchell said: “I think it was Audrey Hepburn who said to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow, and I think that’s the most important thing. These guys are our future, if they don’t grow food, we don’t have food.”
