GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said deputies have made a “significant breakthrough” in a decades-old cold case investigation.

In a press conference on Monday, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said deputies found an unmarked body in a potter’s grave marked with a sign marked “Mr. X.”

Investigators identified Mr. X whose identity has remained unknown since his body was first discovered in 1975.

23-year-old man dies after Aiken County shooting

Investigators are seeking the community’s assistance with any information on a shooting investigation that led to the death of an Aiken man.

A shooting at Sage Creek Boulevard and Bettis Academy Road left one person dead early June 8,...

Sheriff Lewis said Mr. X was the subject of a death investigation initiated on Jan. 4, 1975. His body was discovered by a hunter off of a property along Highway 20 near Blakely Road.

According to Sheriff Lewis, Mr. X’s death was ruled a homicide due to blunt force trauma to the head and strangulation.

Officials said in 1976, Jackie Anderson was arrested and charged with murder but due to insufficient evidence, the case was dismissed.

As of June 10, 2024, the sheriff’s office said it does not believe Anderson was involved in Mr. X’s murder.

Mr. X was identified as Oscar James Nedd of White Plains, New York.

Deputies believe that Nedd was killed in New York and his body was brought to South Carolina.

Sheriff Lewis said this homicide investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office at Crime Stoppers of Greenville at 23-CRIME.
