As Aiken Mall construction continues, other city developments start
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - If you drive in the city of Aiken, things look a little different with new developments on the way.
Every day, crews have been swiftly working on a new zone that will hold apartments, a hotel, restaurants, shopping and more.
“I think growth can be a good thing when the Aiken residents are put first,” said Lisdaney Vanderford.
Vanderford has lived in Aiken her entire life.
The city she knew growing up is not what she sees today.
Opening date set for new FreshTake supermarket in Augusta
An opening date is now scheduled for the new FreshTake supermarket on Washington Road at the former site of Whole Foods.

“I love that there is more for our Aiken residents to do. I obviously don’t love seeing commercialism like Dollar General and these tire places popping up all over the place,” said Vanderford.
Vanderford says she would like to have input on what comes to her hometown.
“Put Aiken residents at the forefront of this planning, that it could be a good thing and bring a lot of good things to Aiken,” she said.
While some people believe the development brings more hope for the city, others feel that the growth is happening at a rapid pace.
“It’s promising and exciting growth is great, but it does need to be managed,” said Nicole Pioli.
Aiken school leaders give update on 1% sale tax
Voters in Aiken County will have a big decision to make in November — whether to continue a 1% sales tax to raise money for local schools.

From new developments on Laurens Street to Whiskey Road, locals are seeing growth everywhere.
“When I first moved to Aiken, pulling off the interstate, it was a really long stretch before you saw any development. Now, it’s like the growth is booming on all sides of Aiken,” said Pioli.
But for one business owner, change is exciting.
“Well, we had a pretty good positive impact as more people move into the area and need our services, which has been good for us,” said Nathan Arhelger.
Along with shopping, when the Aiken Mall project is finished, it will cover 44 acres, featuring a walking trail and a park. A new Chicken Salad Chick is already over there.
It will also be getting a new name — Aiken Towne Park.
