Aiken school leaders give update on 1% sale tax
AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Voters in Aiken County will have a big decision to make in November — whether to continue a 1% sales tax to raise money for local schools.
The question is, how will they spend the $285 million the tax will raise?
Now, we have a better idea.
School leaders are narrowing down a list of where that money will go.
Water, sewer rates continue to increase for city of Aiken
Water and sewer rates went up by 7% in the city of Aiken. Hopes for a break on the water bill are going down the drain for some.

On Tuesday, we’re learning a new elementary school in area three is on the list.
Also on the list:
- South Aiken High School: $65 million.
- Midland Valley High School: $65 million.
- North Augusta Middle School: $52 million.
- Silver Bluff High School: $55 million.
In May, school leaders asked for from parents on the sales tax.
“This is just a renewal. There won’t be any additions, nothing will change on anybody’s grocery bill or anything else or any purchases that they make. This would just be a continuation of the penny,” said Former Aiken County Public School Superintendent King Laurence.
