2 men accused of apartment complex fire in North Augusta

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Two suspects have been accused of arson at the Palmetto Place Apartments back in June on Thursday, according to authorities.

The two suspects are Nelson Dwayne Locklair, 41, and Brian Keon Byrd, 30.

On June 2, public safety officers responded to a structure fire at Apartment 107, Palmetto Place Apartments, located at 1200 West Martintown Road, according to North Augusta Lt. Allen Swann.

It’s been a little more than a week since a massive fire impacted families at the Nine Two Six West apartment complex, and now the donations are pouring in.

When officers arrived they reported heavy smoke coming from the apartment. Fire crews entered the apartment and extinguished the fire and began clearing the smoke from the apartment, Swann says.

At that time, it was discovered that there were multiple fires in different apartment rooms, Swann says.

The apartment was secured and North Augusta Public Safety investigators responded to the scene to begin a possible arson investigation.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division Arson Investigators were notified and responded to the scene.

Midland Valley High School’s head football coach – already suspended over a DUI case – has been arrested again, this time on a charge of domestic violence, second degree.

Through a t investigation with North Augusta Public Safety, SLED Arson Division, and SLED Forensics Division, two suspects were identified and arrest warrants were obtained for second-degree arson.

On Thursday, the two suspects were arrested in Darlington and booked into the Darlington County Detention Center, according to Swann.
