Man accused of shooting victim 4 times while ‘playing around’

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A suspect has been accused of shooting a victim four times on Golden Avenue in June, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

On Wednesday, June 5, 2023, at 11:45 p.m. hours, deputies say responded to the 100 block of Golden Avenue about an assault.

An 18-year-old has been charged after a 19-year-old was identified after being found fatally shot in a parking lot this weekend in Augusta.

When deputies arrived, a victim was lying in front of her home with four gunshot wounds in the abdomen, left arm and both legs, deputies say.

The victim told deputies the suspect, Xavier Melton, 31, was “playing around” with a gun, according to authorities.

Deputies say did not find any suspects while on the scene, but they did find shell casings out of the home and one projectile was found inside the home.

A Richmond County male is charged with aggravated assault after an early June shooting incident in Augusta. It happened at a Circle K on Wrightsboro Road.

The victim was treated by Central EMS and transported to the hospital, authorities say.

Melton was arrested on Wednesday and charged with one count of aggravated assault, two counts of possession of a firearm during a crime and three counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to jail records.
