AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The former director of the Aiken County Board of Elections is charged with embezzlement.

A federal indictment alleged Cynthia Delores Holland stole at least $62,664.

Wednesday, during an arraignment hearing, Holland was granted a $25,000 unsecured bond and submitted a plea of not guilty.

South Carolina's highest court, in a nearly 100-page opinion, said the firing quad, electric chair and lethal injection, along with the state’s death penalty itself, are legal.

The theft occurred from around April 2016 through Nov. 22, 2023, the indictment alleged.

Holland served as the county’s election director for 12 years before retiring earlier this year.

The indictment says she’ll need to forfeit the money and/or anything brought with it, as well as interest and proceeds.
