Washington County teacher pleads guilty in child porn case

SANDERSVILLE, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The former head of the drama department at Washington County High School has pleaded guilty to producing, distributing and receiving child sexual abuse material.

Michael Allan Dendy is charged with 21 counts of child porn. A plea was entered in United States vs. Michael Dendy on July 30.

The sentencing is set for Nov. 7 at 3:30 p.m., according to court officials. Dendy will be required to as a sex offender after his release.

He faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in prison and faces a maximum fine of $250,000.

According to court documents, he faces a mandatory minimum term of supervised release of five years.

His charges include five counts of production of child pornography, seven counts of distribution of child pornography, eight counts of receipt of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

Dendy was a Washington County High School teacher from August 2020 to January 2023.

He previously taught at Griffin High School in Griffin, Ga.

The arrest of Dendy followed a months-long investigation into allegations of child pornography involving a person or people under the age of 18.

Sheriff Joel Cochran previously said, “We will continue to work diligently with our counterparts until the resolve of this case is made by the courts.”

Deputies and the Washington County Board of Education police made the arrest.
