New suspect charged in Edgefield County abuse, death of child
EDGEFIELD, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A 30-year-old man has been charged after the ongoing abuse and death of a 3-year-old child, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

An arrest warrant and incident report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office paint a vivid picture of the crime a former Atlanta police officer is accused of in Augusta.

On Wednesday, we learned the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division on Friday charged Caleb Jochen Carter, 30, of Berkeley County, with two counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk of or causing harm or willfully abandoning the child.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, in October 2020, Carter who had charge or custody of a child was unlawfully placed at unreasonable risk of harm.
The arrest warrant affidavit says Carter placed or allowed to be placed an unsafe mouthpiece in the victim’s mouth that resulted in an upper airway obstruction, which caused the child’s death.
Leilani Simon goes to court ahead of October trial in toddler’s killing
Leilani Simon, the former Burke County resident accused of killing her toddler Quinton and discarding his body in a dumpster, made an appearance in court.

Before the child’s death, from July to October 2020, Carter did inflict or allowed the infliction of multiple injuries to the child including bruising to multiple body parts, including but not limited to the chest, back, scrotum, eye, ear and jaw, according to the arrest warrant affidavit.
Carter was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center, authorities say.
The case will be prosecuted by the 11th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, according to SLED.
In the same case, Codi Raye Scott (Carter), 27, was charged in June with two counts of unlawfully placing a child at risk, according to SLED. It’s unclear what the status of her case is.
