AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Crews are battling a grass fire along Bobby Jones Expressway.

The fire was reported at 12:23 p.m. Friday near mile marker 6 between Peach Orchard Road and Mike Padgett Highway.

The fire appears to be on the westbound side of the highway that’s also known as Interstate 520.

There was lots of smoke, some of it black.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to the scene to help with traffic control.

At first, traffic was moving pretty well, but as the operation went on and a lane was closed, traffic was starting to back up by 1:45 p.m.

The sheriff’s office says drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes.

Police blocked the entrance to the nearby Richmond County Technical Magnet School. Only parents could go into the area to pick up kids.

Some parents came early to their children.

The fire didn’t reach the school.
