Finding Solutions: GAP Ministries helps those in need as others give to them
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - One organization is continuing to help those in need as others around them give to their ministry.
The Sanctuary at GAP Ministries is full of donated items from other groups who are assisting in recovery efforts after the storm.
The non-profit is now finding solutions on how they can widen their reach.
Food, water, diapers and more are all being donated to GAP Ministries.
“We feel like right now more than ever collaborating makes us even stronger and able to really feel the need of the community especially if this is the first time someone needs this kind of help,” said Nomi Stanton, executive director of GAP Ministries.
Local and out-of-state organizations, all pitching in to GAP’s mission. The non-profit had storm damage to their building and had to close for a week.
Finding Solutions: Local organization provides teens with a safe space
One local organization is giving teens a safe place to come weekly, and they need your help expanding their outreach.
“We re-opened last week and honestly it was beautiful to see some of the faces of people we’ve been worried about and then also to be able to help more people that we now know we will see as a result of Helene,” said Stanton.
GAP Ministries has been around since 1979 serving those who need help getting by.
Whether that’s food, getting an I.D., birth certificate or basic necessities, the non-profit helps fill the gap.
“As people need us we plan to be there for the community, come together with other non-profits to become a stronger force and we know that it’s scary if you need help and we want to make it less scary,” said Stanton.
She says they were seeing about 270 families come in weekly for food and just last week, post-Helene, the number is growing.
“We’re seeing a really big need for diapers and adult incontinence products,” she said. “We’ve seen a huge increase just last week and our food pantry as well.”
Finding Solutions: Group helps pamper local cancer patients
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, and one local foundation is shining a light on women battling the disease.

Although GAP has received a large amount of donations, Stanton says with the increased need for help, it all won’t last long.
“We know that obviously, we are not going to be able to sustain if we continue to see a hike. So if there are folks that would like to contribute you can always do that online and there are other non-profits that work together and that’s just a beautiful way to give back,” she said.
In order to receive items and resources GAP offers, you will need to fill out some paperwork in person and prove how many are in your household.
You can get more information at their website or by calling them at 706-722-4408. You can also go in person on Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
