Firefighters urge don’t burn debris amid Helene cleanup in Aiken County

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Firefighters in Aiken County are advising people to not burn their yard debris as crews work to cleanup.

Debris concerns continue to loom tall for Augusta city leaders

Debris was a key topic of discussion when Augusta Commission and other officials met at the committee level, with leaders approving millions.

In fact, it’s estimated that 90% of homes are destroyed indirectly by wind-borne embers that are carried ahead of the fire, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission.

In North Augusta, public safety officers announced they have continued to respond to citizens burn debris that quickly gets out of control on Oct. 30.

Officials remind people that the city of North Augusta has a city ordinance which prohibits burning yard debris.

Belvedere firefighters said with over 60 calls this month the estimated dollar amount of loss to be $47,000.

Officials suggest people clean their roofs and gutters of dead leaves, debris and pine needles that could catch embers.

They urge everyone to not burn in neighborhoods and if you must, to do so legally.
