AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Aiken High School volleyball has made it to the third round of the playoffs three times in the last four seasons.

It’s been two since the Hornets eclipsed the third round and eventually found themselves the state champions back in 2022.

Taking on Hartsville, the first set was a little too close for comfort for the Hornets.

Hamilton brothers get inducted into Hall of Fame

From almost giving up on the sport to being put in his high school’s hall of fame alongside his older brother, Antonio Hamilton says his decision to keep pursuing football came at a place where many life-changing decisions are made.

Alexis Mathis and Avery Abrams helped close out the final frame 25 to 19. Set two, Aiken changed their pace of play and found confidence on their side of the court. They posted nine unanswered points before the Red Foxes got their first of the second set. They managed to keep Hartsville at bay 25 to 12. They had one more set to make it their second sweep of the playoffs.

The Hornets’ Bella Head landed the final blow, 25-13, picking up kill No. 500 and a bid to the Lower State Championship.

We caught up with Head Coach Jeremy Rinder after the game.

Greenbrier girls’ flag football is back in action

Girl’s high school flag football is once again underway in the CSRA, and the reigning Division 2 state champions are picking up right where they left off.

“We talked about it, how this could set up to be a perfect trap game, you know, coming off of such a gritty, high energy. And so we talked about being intentional to prevent that. Still felt like we kind of started a little slow, but I think some of that was the pace getting used to, sort of the pace that they were playing at. And so once we kind of figured that out, and figured that pace out, and started executing, you know, kind of at that pace when, when they had the ball, and then pushing, pushing our tempo as much as we could,” said Rinder.

The Hornets were able to use their bench in the second and third sets, which doesn’t happen often this deep in the playoffs.

“Team just doesn’t happen their way into the third round. You know, they’re here for a reason. And so, yeah, to put yourself in a position where you can get that experience is huge in of, you know, for your program and for your for growth. You know, you never know when that number is going to get called. Your number is going to get called. And so to give them, yeah, I think we got most people in there tonight to give them, you know, especially young folks that experience in the third round in the playoffs. We we think, and we believe, will pay dividends both now and and in the future,” said Rinder.
