NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - North Augusta Mayor Briton Williams has announced his candidacy for a second term.

“When I ran for mayor in 2021, I believed we could achieve great things together if we focused on communicating better with our citizens, make downtown the heartbeat of the community and prioritize tourism so we could really highlight North Augusta,” he said Wednesday in a statement.

He listed among the achievements of his first term:

  • Restarting the recycling program after rebuilding the material recovery facility that burned down.
  • Expanding the amphitheater and adding a boat dock at Riverside Village.
  • Investing millions from grants and the American Rescue Plan into infrastructure to improve the sewer and wastewater system.
  • Completing the new Fire Station 1 on Martintown Road.
  • Holding the first-ever citywide Prayer Walk as part of the National Day of Prayer.
  • Forming the nonprofit Beautification Foundation and Public Safety Foundation.
  • Installing three education s in Calhoun Park to tell the correct story of the Hamburg Massacre.

He also highlighted the “Public Power Hour,” “Meet the Mayor” and community engagement meetings, writing and coloring contests for students, the Hometown Highlights newsletter, the citizen involvement form, and public safety Community Action Team to build relationships with the public.

Downtown highlights included installation of benches, trash cans and bike racks, white lights on all the trees downtown, flower baskets on light poles, use of the trolley to “Third Thursday’ each month, completion of the Downtown Greeneway Connector, hiring of an assistant city to focus on our downtown, putting more money into the facade grant program and flagpoles in front of the municipal center facing Georgia Avenue.

Tourism highlights included the Rock-n-Raftin and Down to the River festivals, creating a stand-alone tourism department, creating a new branding logo, a community calendar, tribute concerts and partnering with the Ironman Half Marathon.
