Suspect arrested in shooting that left 73-year-old dead in the street

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that a suspect has been captured in the murder of a 73-year-old man.

Officials said Thursday afternoon that Harold Leverett Jr., 27, had been arrested in the killing that occurred Tuesday in the 1500 block of Picquet Avenue.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen identified the victim as 73-year-old James West, of Augusta.

The shooting was reported at 11:22 a.m. in the 1500 block of Picquet Avenue, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

West was found down on Picquet at Gordon Street, according to Bowen, and pronounced dead at the scene at 11:43 a.m

An autopsy is scheduled.

Authorities had asked the public to help locate Leverett, releasing a photo and other information about him.

The incident followed another deadly shooting in Augusta that left two people dead on the 3000 block of Mystic Lane early Wednesday. Tony Brooks Horne, 46, was arrested on the scene.

Days before that, another shooting incident left multiple people dead in Augusta. That incident happened Nov. 21 in the 2100 blocks of B and C streets, claiming the lives of Jeremy Dontavious McGahee, 34, and Zyquan Jamarcus Franklin, 32, both of Augusta.

The shootings come amid a two-year outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed more than 180 lives across the CSRA.

The separated wife of a 43-year-old man has been charged with murder in his Aiken County shooting death, according to authorities.

An initial court hearing was held for Jennifer Ray on Monday afternoon.

Cities large and small have been affected on both sides of the Savannah River. But as the largest community in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.

Authorities have blamed much of the problem on gangs.
