AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Local cotton farmers with the Georgia Cotton Commission helped the homeless and seniors across Georgia on Thursday.

They helped donate roughly 1,500 socks to benefit the CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority.

It’s been going on since 2019.

We caught up with two volunteers to talk about the sock giveaway and why it’s so important to donate.

Empty Stocking Fund helps families provide Christmas gifts to kids

The holidays can put financial stress on some families to be able to give their kids a good Christmas. That stress is made worse this year after Hurricane Helene.

“It’s cold and it’s unbelievable how cold you get it when you don’t have clean, warm socks or hats. It really bites you to the bone. When you’re living in an encampment or living in a shelter, having access to clean, warm socks every single day is really a challenge. So, getting these donations is huge because it’s something that we can immediately give to people in need,” said Resource Specialist, Danielle Shelton.

The CSRA Economic Office takes donations as well with more than just socks.

They take jackets, food and much more.

They do want you to call ahead so they can be prepared before you donate.
