Biden orders flags to fly half-staff in remembrance of Jimmy Carter

ATLANTA, Ga. - As the nation re 39th President Jimmy Carter, U.S. flags will share the mourning by flying low for the next month.

On Sunday, President Joe Biden ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff for 30 days, or until Jan. 28. He also established Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning — the same day Carter’s remains will be flown from the U.S. Capitol to his hometown of Plains for burial.

“President Carter was a man of character, courage, and comion, whose lifetime of service defined him as one of the most influential statesmen in our history,” Biden wrote in his proclamation. “He embodied the very best of America: A humble servant of God and the people.”

Carter died on Sunday, Dec. 29, at the age of 100. He follows his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who died in November 2023 at the age of 96.

Where will flags fly at half-staff?

Flags are ordered to fly at half-staff at the White House, all public buildings and grounds, military posts, naval stations and on all naval vessels, according to the proclamation. It also orders the same at foreign embassies, legations, consular offices and other facilities representing the United States abroad.

When is Jimmy Carter’s funeral?

On Jan. 4, a motorcade will transport Carter’s remains from a medical center in Americus, Georgia, to The Carter Center in Atlanta. He will lie in repose until Jan. 7 and then travel to the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., to lie in state. Then on Jan. 9, Carter’s body will return to Plains for burial.
