Death considered suspicious after body found in wooded area
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A dead person has been found in a wooded area near Doctors Hospital, authorities said Thursday.
At 2:24 p.m., the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 1200 block of Interstate Parkway in reference to a suspicious situation.
Upon arrival, deputies were told by a surveyor team that they found a deceased body in a wooded area just off the roadway.
Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said it’s being investigated as a suspicious death.
Bowen said an autopsy has been scheduled, and the name will be released once positive identification has been made and next of kin have been notified.
The year is off to a deadly start, with three murders so far in Augusta and now this suspicious death, just three weeks into 2025. Also so far, there have been two homicides in Aiken, one in Waynesboro and one in Sparta.
The slayings are among the latest in a more than two-year outbreak of violent crime that’s claimed about 200 lives across the CSRA.
Communities large and small have been affected on both sides of the Savannah River. But as the largest city in the region, Augusta has been hit especially hard.
