DORAL, FL (Gray Media) - Three days of meetings at Trump Doral have concluded for House Republicans at President Donald Trump’s Doral National golf resort. The annual policy retreat took place as they try to navigate a new Congress with majority control, working to map out a path forward to President Donald Trump’s ambitious policy agenda.

“We’re going to keep our word. This is a conference wide effort,” said Speaker Mike Johnson in a closing press conference.

Johnson is pledging to deliver on campaign promises in one big piece of legislation that includes energy policy, immigration policy, and tax cuts. The conference is plotting to do it using the reconciliation process which requires simple majority votes in both chambers.

“We believe that we are going to engage now in what can be the greatest, one of the greatest pieces of legislation in the history of the United States Congress,” said Johnson.

The Speaker needs buy in from Senate Republicans, but first he needs all his on the same page with virtually no margin for error. Some on his right-most flank, like Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), want to move on border policy first then move on to energy and tax policy. Roy did not attend the retreat.

“We’re building consensus, we’re putting together a blueprint to do a very complicated thing,” said Johnson.

The Speaker is hoping to get this bill to the president’s desk by Easter. President Trump addressed the retreat Monday, reiterating he simply wants the work done with no preference for how.

“Whether it’s one bill, two bills, I don’t care. Let these guys, they’re going to work it out one way or another,” said President Trump.

The Republicans return to Capitol Hill next week to start work on the blueprint they laid out in Doral. Democrats will hold a policy retreat of their own in Virginia in March.
