Former S.C. corrections captain accused of leaking info
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A former captain with the South Carolina Department of Corrections has been accused of leaking confidential information about prison operations and gang activity.
Leon Morell has been charged with disclosure of confidential information, money laundering, ethics violations, obstructions of justice and misconduct in office. He appeared in court Thursday morning.

Prosecutors claimed Morell accepted between $300 and $20,000 in Cash App payments from inmates or their associates in exchange for sensitive information in 2024.
He also allegedly limited access to surveillance footage and told inmates to delete conversations between them.
SCDC said Morell worked at Lee Correctional Institution as a contraband lieutenant before being promoted to istrative captain at MacDougall Correctional Institution in Berkeley County in 2024.
Morell was granted a $50,000 surety bond on Thursday.
Investigators said they expect to uncover even more evidence as the case moves forward.
