AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The first class of jailers in Richmond County being trained under Sheriff Eugene Brantley’s istration graduated on Friday.

The graduating class included jailers for the sheriff’s office and around Georgia.

Brantley said the completion came with a roughly $10,000 pay raise for our local graduates.

Brantley spoke about what the graduating class means for the city, the community and the jails.

“Well, it means that we’re fixing some of the shortcomings that you know we had previously under the previous istration with staffing. A lot of problems that the lack of staff presents like some of the things that we’re not able to watch the inmates and provide the necessary care and protection for them,” said Brantley.

We also heard from a longtime deputy who was promoted to senior deputy after completing his certification training.

He spoke about what he would say to anyone considering ing the sheriff’s office.

“I would say don’t listen to what your friends tell you and don’t base your career choice off of what people think. Make that choice and decision because ultimately, you’re going to be the one working in that field. I’m extremely happy with what I’ve done over the years, and I can’t see myself doing anything other than law enforcement,” said Kennedy.

Brantley says he was elated to have people like Kennedy committed to the profession and what they do.
