Finding Solutions: Camp Tanglewood opens its doors for summer program
MARTINEZ, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Camp Tanglewood, located in Columbia County, is opening its gates just in time for summer camp.
We told you back in November how the camp was left unrecognizable after Hurricane Helene.
With the community’s help, Camp Tanglewood is finding solutions to how they can make this year’s summer camp as normal as possible.

Wellstar MCG Health recently launched the Hospital Care at Home program which provides patients with everything they need to recover from the comfort of their own bed.
“We’ve had a lot of help cleaning up, and removing fallen trees. We have companies out now removing fallen trees to make it as safe as we can because we are having camp this year, thank goodness,” said Shawn Risher, community engagement manager for Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia.
Risher says there’s still work that needs to be done, so summer camp will look a little different this year.
“Typically, we have two weeks of summer camp here at Camp Tanglewood and this year we had to scale it down to have one week with 80 participants, ranging from 6th to 12th grade,” said Risher.
Risher says he’s a Girl Scout dad and knows firsthand the benefits the camp offers.
‘Spread the Love’ campaign begins at Golden Harvest
Golden Harvest Food Bank is spreading the love this February and they’re calling on you at home.

“My daughter coming out here staying the week, staying without screens, TVs, and having that sense of accomplishment. They go through all our core pillars and being able to just enjoy themselves being in nature and having camaraderie with their fellow Girl Scouts,” said Risher.
11 structures were damaged, including two cook shelters and five cabins.
Risher says they’re in the planning process of getting those rebuilt with hopes to be back in full swing next year.
“When the girls finally have their camp fully functional, it’s going to be amazing. We’re going to be ten times better than what we were at Camp Tanglewood,” he said.
