SALUDA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A former employee of the Saluda County Tax Auditor’s Office was charged with manipulating the tax bills of friends and family to cheat the county out of thousands of dollars, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Suspect in Edgefield inmate’s slaying charged with murder

The charges stem from when she was acting in her official capacity as a county employee, and the investigation was requested by the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office.

Berry was charged Monday and booked into the Saluda County Detention Center, according to SLED.

From March 2021 through November 2023, Berry “committed malfeasance, misfeasance, or nonfeasance of her official duties,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Berry inappropriately adjusted tax bills for her family and friends by providing discounts without proper documentation, erroring out bills or changing the value of the vehicles, the affidavit alleges.

The adjustments cost Saluda County about $6,081, according to the affidavit.

Berry had her own unique to the tax bill system that logged and identified the changes she made, the affidavit alleges.
