4 arrested after attempting to smuggle drugs into Hancock State Prison

SPARTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Four people have been accused of attempting to smuggle drugs into the Hancock State Prison this week.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says deputies received a call from Hancock State Prison staff in reference to spotting someone in the woods near the prison on Monday night.

Deputies were dispatched to the prison to assist the Department of Corrections staff.

The sheriff’s office says a K-9 was dispatched out to search the area where the subjects were last seen.

According to deputies, while searching the area, the K-9 was able to track the subjects, which were located on the prison grounds.

Law enforcement responds to Hillman Street in Warrenville

There was a law enforcement presence in Warrenville on Thursday evening.

The sheriff’s office says 42-year-old Jeremiah Canty and 27-year-old Jamirio Ray, both of Macon, were arrested without incident.

Both are charged with possession of ecstasy, use of communication device in commission of a crime, conspiracy to commit a crime, possession with intent to distribute MDMA (Ecstasy), criminal tres, possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, crossing of guard lines, items prohibited for possession by inmate without the authorization of the warden and trafficking ecstasy.

Canty and Ray are both being held at the Sparta/Hancock Detention Center without bond, according to deputies.

Deputies say around 10:13 p.m. on March 7, a deputy was patrolling Cody Johnson Road near Hancock State Prison when they noticed a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe failure to maintain lane.

The deputy initiated a traffic stop for the violation.

While approaching the vehicle, the deputy says they noticed three individuals in the vehicle — two adults and one juvenile.

The deputy smelled a loud odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the driver and the enger were transporting illegal drugs and packages with a minor, the deputy says.

The sheriff’s office says 39-year-old Shakell Thomas and 34-year-old Jarmarquis Brock were detained and transported to the Sparta/Hancock Detention Center.

The sheriff’s office says Thomson is charged with failure to maintain lane, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, items prohibited for possession by an inmates without authorization of the warden and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.
