ICE to train 1,100 Georgia Department of Public Safety officers
ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - All 1,100 Georgia Department of Public Safety sworn officers will get training from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the office of Gov. Brian Kemp said Monday.
It’s part of an effort to better identify and apprehend people in the country illegally who pose a risk to public safety, according to Kemp.
As authorized by the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, ICE can delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the authority to perform specified immigration officer functions under the agency’s direction and oversight. It’s through a program known as 287(g).
