AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Augusta community is in mourning on Monday after a two-year-old girl was killed by a driver in the Allen Homes neighborhood.

This happened when authorities say a driver went over the curb onto the sidewalk on Peters Road just off Laney Walker Boulevard and Gordon Highway.

Aura Moody was out on the sidewalk at night when she was hit.

She was rushed to the hospital and died around 9:30 p.m. Friday night.

While we wait for investigators to give us more answers, we were able to hear from neighbors who are shocked by this entire situation.

It’s hard to imagine that a toddler’s life could be taken in a way that’s unimaginable to a family, especially while they are all playing together.

Could historic Augusta school become new senior living apartments?

Plans are underway for an affordable senior living apartment complex in the Sand Hills neighborhood. The site is the historic Weed School on Mount Auburn Street.

While police still haven’t said what the circumstances are around all of this, neighbors in the Allen Homes community say they need to come together and look out for one another.

One minute Aura Moody was playing on the sidewalk with her family and the next, her life was tragically taken.

“It’s a tragic, hurting thing,” said Carlean Benning, who lives nearby.

Deputies say a female driver drove up onto the sidewalk, hitting two-year-old Moody.

“They come through here a lot,” said Benning. “Cars, trucks, everything you know.”

Brnning has lived on Peters Road for six years and never experienced anything like this – especially in an area where she says kids are always playing.

“It’s so sad that one of our babies got killed out here like that,” said Benning. “I watch over the kids and we as a community, I feel like should get together and pay more attention to those kids and the babies when they’re here in the street.”

A loss no parent should ever feel.

“I’ve lost a son and that hurts,” said Benning. “A baby – well he was grown when he ed, but a baby. That really hurts me.”

“I want to go and pay my condolences to the parents of that baby because I feel the loss too.” My heart hurts and I hope it never happens anywhere like that again,” said Benning.

There are still so many questions about what happened that night.

We’ve asked police if that driver will be charged, but they told us the investigation is still underway.

Again, there are still some details that are unclear about what led up to Aura’s death, but what we do know is, it’s hit our community hard.
