ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - U.S. Rep. Nikema Williams, who came under heavy criticism from several prominent Georgia Democrats in the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election, resigned Monday as chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia (DPG).

Williams, who represents the Atlanta congressional district once held for decades by the late John Lewis, announced her resignation following this past DPG vote that creates a full time, paid chair position.

Williams has said in the past she would resign if the DPG created that position.

Georgia’s Brian Kemp would tie for the nation’s top-paid governor under a pay-raise proposal

The measure would raise Kemp’s pay from the $182,000 he made in the budget year that ended June 30 to $250,000.

Brian Kemp State of the State

“When I was elected to the role of chairwoman in 2019, Georgia was on the cusp of an extraordinary shift that few would buy into,” Williams said in a statement. “Through strategic vision, relentless organizing, and an unwavering belief in the power of our people, we turned this state into the battleground it was always meant to be.

“Under my leadership, we elected both Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to the U.S. Senate; sent a Democrat to the White House for the first time in 28 years; expanded our influence in the state legislature and flipped hundreds of municipal and county seats—proving that Georgia’s political future belongs to those willing to fight for it,” Williams said.

“None of this happened overnight or alone,” she said. “It took a strategy led by Democratic elected officials, DPG state committee , county party , activists, union leaders, civil rights groups, civic engagement organizations and so many more.

“In partnership we have turned the DPG into a national force and I know the best is still yet to come.”

Ossoff was one of Williams’ most prominent critics after Republican Donald Trump recaptured Georgia and carried every other swing state in the 2024 election as part of his unprecedented return to the White House.

Republican female lawmakers pen legislation to protect access to contraception

It’s a short bill summed up by one of its lines, “Females have the right to the use of any means of contraception.”

Georgia state lawmakers could vote on a package of tort reform bills as early as this week.
