CHARLESTON, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Medical University of South Carolina plans to build a new cancer hospital and medical office building in Charleston, making it the only dedicated cancer hospital in the state.

The parking lot next to Rutledge Tower is where MUSC plans to build the hospital.

The goal is to advance cancer care, research and prevention throughout the state. It will provide one-stop integrated inpatient and outpatient services like surgeries, stem cell transplantation, chemotherapy and infusion services, radiation therapy, clinical trials and more.

SPCA Thrift Store raises funds for animal care

The SPCA Thrift Store held a spring party - Paws and Petals - benefiting the Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare.

“The reason we are doing this is number one, there are a lot of people coming to South Carolina, number two, the number of cancer cases is growing, partly because of that, but partially because we see a heavy cancer burden in South Carolina,” MUSC Health CEO Dr. Patrick Cawley said.

Cawley said Rutledge Tower is an old hospital and will come down to make room for the new cancer hospital.

“The building is aged. It’s just not built for what I would call modern health care, and so we have been looking at options to replace that for a number of years. We are going to decant and get everyone out of that building into this other new building,” Crawley said.

Aiken businesses see faces new and old during golf week

Golf festivities have wrapped up for the CSRA and area businesses saw Amp the Alley and other events bring solid traffic over the last week.

The board also approved construction of a medical office building with clinics and an ambulatory outpatient surgery center, which will be at 334 Calhoun St. It will replace services at Rutledge Tower.

Crawley says you could see construction on the ambulatory clinical facilities in about a year, with a plan of opening by 2028. The cancer hospital is expected to be completed within five years. Crawley says he expects construction on it to begin in a year and a half to two years.
