NEW YORK (Gray Media) - Luigi Mangione was arraigned on federal charges Friday nearly five months after he allegedly killed United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson.

ers and opponents of Luigi Mangione lined the streets outside the courthouse in lower Manhattan as the 26-year-old accused of a coordinated assassination of Thompson in December pleaded not guilty to four federal charges lodged against him.

The most severe charge, murder through use of a firearm, could carry a death sentence with federal prosecutors announcing Thursday their intent to seek the death penalty. Their decision comes after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi requested them to seek capital punishment.

Prosecutors argue Mangione was not only trying to kill Thompson, but spark backlash against the entire health care industry. Mangione’s attorneys say seeking the death penalty in this case is political and goes against the recommendation of law and historical precedent.

Prosecutors are confident a mountain of evidence will lead to a conviction. Despite the evidence against him, Mangione is still seeing a groundswell of physically at the courthouse and financially through donations from people who feel his motivations were just.

Mangione also facing less severe state charges here in New York and in Pennsylvania where he was arrested.
