AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - More new graduates are ready to start their new chapter of life.

We were at Butler High School as students walked across the stage at Bell Auditorium on Friday morning.

The ceremony was bittersweet as they ed Butler High School football player Zaire Person, who was killed in a 2023 shooting.

His family was given an honorary diploma, and his jersey number has been retired.

The school’s valedictorian, Shannell Reese, spoke at the graduation, encouraging her classmates to follow their dreams.

″When you leave here, I want you to do it with grace, ion and gratitude,” said Reese. “Grace for all the times we did not have together and still showed up, ion for the goals we are chasing even if we are still figuring them out and gratitude for our ancestors who paved the way the teachers who pushed us even when we didn’t want to be pushed and the amazing community who showed up for us in both big and small ways.”

Although high school was fun, many of them are looking forward to what’s next.
