Augusta Boxing Club aims for historical marker after 50 years of service
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Since its founding, the Augusta Boxing Club has produced multiple titles and championship belts.
The recognition they are chasing now — something that will last longer than a trophy.
For over 50 years, the Augusta Boxing Club has stood the test of time.
“We’ve been around in Georgia, we’re one of the oldest boxing clubs in Georgia,” Rayonta Whitfield, a professional boxer with Augusta Boxing Club, says.
While their recognition has swept the city, the club wants to punch a historical marker on its front door — knocking out any debate of its longstanding history.
“I’ve been here for 35 years. That would mean a lot to this program to have a historical marker in Augusta, Georgia,” Whitfield says.
The club missed last year’s cutoff date.
“We’re still in the process. We missed the deadline to get all of our paperwork in for it last year. So, we’re going back towards it again to try and get that historical marker.”
In the meantime, Whitfield and his staff will continue to serve the Garden City, just as they have for the last five decades.
“This summer you know the kids will be out of school so we’re inviting everybody to come in. Parents, bring your kids out to the Boxing Club for the summer, keep them out of trouble, and give them something to do. It’s gonna be a hot summer.”
Whitfield says Augusta Boxing Club will host its Sixth Annual Book Back Drive at the end of July, where you can also catch some of the club’s best boxers on display.
