AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - Jewish synagogues are on high alert in metro Atlanta following two terror attacks against the Jewish community in Colorado and Washington, D.C., during the past couple of weeks.

Some synagogues have hired security to keep the community safe.

Dov Wilker is the regional director of the American Jewish Committee and said antisemitism has many living in fear.

Impact of tariffs on Black hair industry felt by metro Atlanta stylists

The Trump istration’s tariffs on imported goods are driving up prices for a number of products in the Black hair industry and metro Atlanta stylists are feeling the impacts.

“The Jewish community is absolutely on edge and is reeling from the last two weeks of attacks that we have faced,” Wilker said.

“We must that antisemitism is a global virus. It has infected the minds of people on the left and on the right, those who are Christian, those who are Muslim, those who represent various ideologies,” Wilker said.

On Sunday, law enforcement responded to a terror attack on demonstrators in Boulder, Colorado, who were calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. Authorities said the suspect used a makeshift flamethrower and incendiary devices to attack the group, injuring a handful of them.

Neighbors call for more in Harrisburg after shooting

Two teens have been charged after a shooting incident in the Harrisburg area that left two people injured on Sunday night, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

“This reinforces, unfortunately, the concern and anxiety that the Jewish community has, and even though these events didn’t happen in Atlanta, the Jewish community in Atlanta has direct personal connections to these communities, to the individuals, and for me, friends of friends were victims of these attacks,” Wilker said.

The latest attack comes on the heels of another violent incident a couple of weeks ago, in which two Israeli embassy staffers were shot and killed outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.

“This means the Jewish community around the world, not just in the United States, but around the world are really feeling this, and more so than they have over the past 18 months,” Wilker said. “We are always concerned about our safety and security at a level that very few others if any others are used to.”
