NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A drop box at the North Augusta post office appeared to have been damaged in some way, possibly leaving the box vulnerable.

It was unclear how that happened – whether it was damaged intentionally or not.

The North Augusta Department of Public Safety confirmed Wednesday that the mailbox had been damaged but said it hadn’t gotten any reports of mail theft.

5 big mail thieves busted in CSRA, but what if you’re a victim?

Several Richmond County residents face prison for stealing mail using U.S. Postal Service master keys.

Post office robberies

It comes a few months after another incident involving a drop box at the post office.

In December, a man was arrested after North Augusta officers chased him into Georgia after a witness said a car pulled up behind a drop box in the 1400 block of Georgia Avenue, loaded mail into the back of his car and drove off.

Michael Jermain Thompson Jr, 23, was arrested in that case.

Although it’s not clear whether this week’s incident was the work of thieves, postal drop boxes and community mailboxes are treasure troves for criminals – and they’re often stealing the master keys from mail carriers, as happened recently in Augusta.

When you drop a letter or a bill in a blue collection box, you expect it will get where it needs to go. Crooks have other plans, though, and the post office knows it.

Before you drop an envelope in one of those blue boxes, United States Postal workers want you...

The thieves are usually after checks that people use to pay their bills. The thieves alter and then deposit the funds using an app.

These check-washing schemes have been going on for quite a while in the Augusta area.
