Contractor stole $60K worth of equipment from hospital to sell on eBay and Marketplace, officials say

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (KCRG/Gray News) - A man in Iowa is facing multiple charges after police said he stole and attempted to sell $60,000 worth of medical equipment from a university’s health care campus.

Authorities said 56-year-old Kevin Lane Grimm was taken into custody and booked in the Johnson County Jail on Tuesday.

Grimm was charged with ongoing criminal conduct and theft, along with several other charges.

According to court documents, Grimm is accused of using his job as a contractor to access and take medical construction equipment over a several-month period while the new University of Iowa Health Care campus was being built in North Liberty.

Officials said Grimm would then the stolen equipment as “new” on websites like eBay and Facebook Marketplace and would sell the items at a discount.

Court documents said Grimm was still actively selling the stolen equipment until his arrest.

Some of the medical equipment Grimm is accused of stealing are devices that are restricted by the Food and Drug istration and allowed only to doctors with a current national provider identification number, those being directly supervised by a physician or with a prescription from a physician.
