Golf tournament honors Lee Elder, first Black golfer to play in Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A golf tournament honored the first black golfer invited to play in the masters.

On Wednesday, people competed in the ninth annual fundraiser for the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History.

Lee Elder and his caddies, Henry Brown, Jessie Ross and Henry McLendan were all honored during the tournament at the Bell Meade Country Club.

Federal agents arrested a South Carolina man this week, accused of pointing a gun at a school bus with children inside.

“That was back in 1975, and just how amazing that day was because you got a black golfer, and like I iterated earlier, from 32 to 82 all of the caddies were black, so here’s a black golfer and here’s a black caddie carrying their bags for Lee Elder,” said Leon Maben, president, Board of Directors Lucy Craft Museum.

All proceeds from the tournament go towards the museum’s house renovation project.
