Human remains found in river identified as man missing since 2022
NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KFVS/Gray News) - Human remains found in the Mississippi River three years ago have been identified as an Indiana man.
The New Madrid County Sheriff’s Office in Missouri said that the remains belonged to Robert J. Eaton, 26, who was reported missing in 2022.
Eaton was last seen on February 20, 2022, at Caesar’s Southern Indiana Casino in Elizabeth, Indiana.
Eaton’s family said an Uber dropped him off at the casino, however, he never took his scheduled ride home.
On June 2, 2022, the sheriff’s office received a call about a human body that was spotted in the Mississippi River near Portageville, Missouri.
Officers recovered Eaton’s remains, which were taken to a medical examiner for an autopsy.
The autopsy revealed there were no signs of trauma and it was believed he likely died about two months prior.
The cause of Eaton’s death and the circumstances regarding his disappearance are part of an ongoing investigation.
