Homeowners living a ‘nightmare’ dealing with piles of trash and feces at neighbor’s house
FISHERSVILLE, Va. (WHSV/Gray News) - Residents in one Virginia neighborhood say they have had enough dealing with a home that has had trash piled up for years.
For more than six years, homeowners in Fishersville on Celebrity Lane say trash has been building up outside of a home, and it is something that is causing health concerns.
“There were over 30 buckets, 30 buckets of human feces on the ground in between the house and the building,” resident Cheri Huber said. “Most of us in the neighborhood have had to put up cameras. You never know who’s coming in and out.”
Huber and her mother have lived in their home for as long as they can , but for the last several years, they said it has been horrific.
“I do not want to see people squatting next to my house with their pants down. I do not want to see stuff like that,” Huber said.
According to Huber, she has been begging the county to do something about the problem, but there is yet to be a solution.
Some have suggested moving, but that is something Huber says her mother does not want to do with everything going on.
“She’s never gonna sell this house as long as that’s all happening next door. And that’s kind of tragic,” Huber said.
Doug Wolfe, Augusta County’s community development director, said the county sent people in hazmat suits on May 12 to collect 30-40 buckets of human feces and other trash outside of the home.
However, Huber said the trash is once again piling back up.
“It’s becoming a health hazard. My mom and I can’t even open the back windows to our home. You don’t want to smell garbage. You don’t want to smell human feces,” Huber said. “There is an abundant smell of feces. It smells like you’re in the toilet.”
Wolfe said the property in question’s homeowner is being taken care of by others who are staying with him. However, Huber said he is not being taken care of properly and that she is worried about what might happen to him.
“I don’t want to look out my kitchen window one morning and see him in a body bag,” Huber said.
According to the community director, the county has sent multiple letters to the homeowner about the ongoing issues, but he has not responded.
Now, the situation is going to court on June 13. The county said it is seeking to increase its access to the property to deal with the trash and provide adjunctive relief.
