JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ/Gray News) - A man in West Virginia is accused of allegedly beating his pregnant girlfriend and leaving her in the woods to die.

Logan Willis, 21, was charged with attempted murder, malicious assault and strangulation.

Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger says Willis drove to a rural gas station, called 911 and said he thought he had just killed his girlfriend.

However, his girlfriend was still alive.

Willis told investigators that the victim stopped breathing and he dragged her to a wooded area.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim “was observed to have numerous serious injuries consistent with a life-altering beating.”

“It’s as much of an issue making sure the baby survives as her,” the sheriff added.

The 21-year-old is currently being held on a $500,000 bond.

The woman’s and baby’s condition is unknown.
