Augusta 35-year-old killed by drive-by shooting in Aiken city limits

AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A 35-year-old Augusta man died after a drive-by shooting at an Aiken apartment complex, according to authorities.
The shooting occurred late Tuesday at the Colony Woods apartments, 811 Laurens St. NW.
Authorities say Eugene A. Simpkins, of East Hale Street in Augusta, was visiting a friend at the apartment complex and was sitting outside in front when a vehicle drove by and someone fired shots from it.
Authorities said Simpkins suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:05 p.m.
He will be autopsied today in Newberry, according to the office of Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables, which is investigating the death along with the Aiken Department of Public Safety.
No description was available of the vehicle or suspects involved in the shooting.
Aiken Department of Public Safety investigators, emergency medical crews and the Aiken County sheriff’s dog team responded to the scene along with Ables' agency.
